The Farrowing Pen Combination Floor is a modular flooring system developed specifically for sow and piglet housing in commercial farrowing barns. It combines different flooring materials and functional zones within one pen so that the sow and newborn piglets can each receive flooring suited to their different requirements for grip, thermal comfort, drainage and durability. A typical system combines polypropylene plastic slats in piglet and circulation areas with heavy-duty cast iron slats beneath or around the sow. Optional heating plates, solid resting sections, STEP-style elevated sow sections and manure-management accessories can be incorporated according to the farrowing system and farm management strategy. The modular construction makes it possible to adapt the floor around traditional farrowing crates, variable-restraint pens and loose-farrowing systems. Panel dimensions, opening ratios, support profiles and floor zoning can be configured according to pen dimensions, manure-pit layout, sow size and project requirements. |

| Working Principle / Structural Principle |
The combination-floor principle recognizes that the sow and newborn piglets require different floor conditions. The sow produces considerably more body heat and places a much higher mechanical load on the floor, while newborn piglets require a warmer microclimate and smaller, animal-friendly openings. Cast iron or heavy-duty sow slats can therefore be positioned beneath the central sow area. Their high mechanical strength provides a stable surface, while thermal conductivity can help create a comparatively cooler lying area for the sow. Polypropylene slats are used around piglet circulation and resting areas. Smaller or reduced-opening designs help provide secure footing while allowing manure and liquids to drain through the floor. Heating plates can be incorporated into the piglet zone to provide a localized warm resting area without increasing the temperature of the entire farrowing room. This allows the floor layout to create separate thermal zones for the sow and litter. All floor sections transfer animal and equipment loads through support profiles to structural bearing points around the manure pit. Correct support spacing and installation are determined according to the selected floor components and project design. |
