| Product Overview |
The Variable-Restraint Farrowing Pen is a welfare-oriented sow housing system designed to combine controlled restraint during the critical farrowing period with increased freedom of movement during lactation. It provides a practical alternative between a conventional fixed farrowing crate and a completely unrestricted free-farrowing pen. The system typically incorporates an adjustable or opening farrowing frame, piglet protection areas, a heated creep or resting zone, pen partitions, sow and piglet flooring, feeding and drinking equipment, and safe access for farm personnel. During farrowing and the early period when newborn piglets are especially vulnerable to accidental crushing, the restraint frame can be closed according to the farm's management protocol. After the critical period, the frame can be opened to provide the sow with a larger usable area for standing, turning and natural movement while remaining together with her litter. |

| Working Principle / Structural Principle |
The variable-restraint concept divides farrowing management into different operating stages instead of keeping the sow permanently confined. 1. Farrowing and Early Piglet Stage The restraint frame can remain closed around farrowing and during the initial period after birth. The controlled sow area helps manage sow movement while piglets are still small and less able to avoid the sow. 2. Transition to Open Housing When the farm's management protocol determines that the litter is sufficiently established, the restraint frame can be opened. The sow then gains access to a larger portion of the pen and has more freedom to stand, turn and change position. 3. Piglet Protection and Thermal Zoning Piglets can use a protected creep or heated resting zone separate from the sow's main lying area. This creates different functional zones within the same farrowing pen for sow comfort, piglet warmth and safer resting. The result is a flexible farrowing environment that supports piglet protection during the most critical stage while providing greater sow mobility later in lactation. |
