Product Overview

The Cast Iron Heated Sheep Drinker is an automatic livestock watering bowl developed for goat-farming-equipment/" target="_blank" class="keylink">sheep, goats and other compatible farm animals requiring reliable access to water during freezing weather. Its heavy cast iron bowl, enamelled surface and integrated electric heating system provide a durable solution for cold-climate livestock facilities.

The reference configuration uses a 24 V heating element positioned beneath the bowl and protected by a stainless steel cover. An integrated thermostat controls heating automatically, while a float valve maintains a constant water level and provides rapid refill as animals drink.

The compact wall- or post-mounted design is suitable for sheep barns, lambing facilities, goat houses, holding pens and steel structure livestock buildings. Water connection, mounting configuration and additional supply-line frost protection can be adapted according to local climate and project requirements.

Key Features
  • Heated Winter Operation: Integrated 24 V heating helps protect the drinking bowl against freezing in cold-weather livestock applications.
  • Cast Iron Bowl: Heavy-duty enamelled cast iron provides durability, impact resistance and long service life in commercial farm environments.
  • Automatic Float Valve: Maintains a constant water level and automatically replenishes water as animals drink.
  • Rapid Water Refill: Reference float-valve configuration supports flow rates up to approximately 8 L/min under suitable water-pressure conditions.
  • Thermostatic Control: Integrated thermostat automatically activates and deactivates heating according to temperature conditions.
  • Stainless Steel Valve Cover: Removable cover protects the float mechanism while allowing convenient service access.
  • Easy Drainage: Large push-out drain plug allows rapid emptying of the bowl for cleaning and maintenance.
  • Livestock-Safe Geometry: Rounded construction avoids exposed sharp edges around the animal drinking area.
  • Flexible Water Connection: Water inlet can be arranged from the right or left side according to installation requirements.
  • Cold-Climate Integration: Additional frost-protection heating for the supply pipe can be incorporated according to local winter conditions.
Structural Components
Component Function
Cast Iron Drinking Bowl Provides a strong and stable drinking surface suitable for frequent livestock use.
Enamelled Surface Helps protect the cast iron and provides a smooth surface for routine cleaning.
Float Valve Assembly Controls water inflow automatically to maintain the preset drinking level.
24 V Heating Element Installed beneath the bowl to provide frost protection during cold-weather operation.
Integrated Thermostat Controls the heating element automatically according to temperature.
Stainless Steel Cover Protects the float and heating-related components from direct livestock contact.
Drain Plug Allows rapid emptying for cleaning, sanitation and servicing.
Water Inlet Connection Connects the drinking bowl to the farm water distribution system.
Working Principle / Structural Principle

During normal operation, the float valve maintains a constant water level inside the drinking bowl. As sheep or goats consume water, the float drops and opens the inlet valve. Fresh water enters automatically until the preset level is restored, after which the valve closes.

For frost protection, the electric heating element mounted beneath the cast iron bowl transfers heat into the drinking area. The reference thermostat switches the heating system on at approximately 15°C and off at approximately 25°C, reducing unnecessary heater operation when sufficient temperature is maintained.

The reference heated configuration is designed for frost protection down to approximately -20°C under suitable installation conditions. Water-supply pipes should also be protected from freezing where necessary, because bowl heating alone does not protect an exposed upstream pipeline.

Customization Options

For commercial livestock projects, the heated drinking system can be adapted according to winter climate, farm layout and water-supply conditions. Available options may include:

  • Heating power and electrical configuration according to project requirements
  • Water inlet orientation
  • Float valve and flow-rate configuration
  • Wall, post or livestock-partition mounting
  • Height-adjustable mounting arrangements for sheep
  • Supply-pipe heating cable
  • Pipeline insulation and frost protection
  • Protective plate for exposed branch lines
  • Mounting brackets for round or flat structural posts
  • OEM identification and export packaging

Final configuration should be designed according to local climate, minimum winter temperature, water pressure, animal size and farm conditions.

Installation & Maintenance

Mounting Position: Install the drinking bowl at an appropriate height for sheep or goats and secure it to a structurally adequate wall, post or livestock pen support.

Water Connection: Connect the inlet to a clean pressurized livestock water supply. Confirm operating pressure before commissioning and adjust the float to the required drinking level.

Electrical Installation: Connect the low-voltage heating system through a compatible transformer and electrical protection arrangement. Installation should comply with applicable local electrical regulations.

Supply-Line Frost Protection: In freezing climates, protect the incoming water pipe with suitable insulation and, where required, a compatible heating cable. Bowl heating does not eliminate the need to protect exposed plumbing.

Routine Cleaning: Use the large drain plug to empty the bowl and remove feed residue, sediment and other contamination. Clean the enamelled surface regularly to maintain hygienic drinking conditions.

Pre-Winter Inspection: Before freezing weather, inspect the heating element, thermostat, float valve, transformer, cable connections and water-line protection system to confirm reliable operation.

Project Cases

Cast iron heated sheep drinkers can be integrated into complete cold-climate livestock projects together with galvanized sheep pens, water supply pipelines, frost-protection heating cables, feeding equipment, drainage systems and insulated steel structure livestock buildings. Drinking-point quantity and mounting height can be planned according to flock size, pen layout and animal groups.

Product FAQ

Q: How does the heated sheep drinker prevent freezing?
A: A low-voltage heating element installed beneath the cast iron bowl supplies heat during cold conditions, while an integrated thermostat controls heater operation automatically.

Q: Does the bowl refill automatically?
A: Yes. The float valve opens as the water level drops and closes when the preset level is restored.

Q: Is the drinker suitable for sheep and goats?
A: Yes. The reference configuration is recommended for sheep, goats and other compatible livestock.

Q: Is the bowl really made from cast iron?
A: Yes. The reference model uses a black enamelled cast iron bowl with a removable stainless steel cover over the valve area.

Q: Can it be used below -20°C?
A: The reference bowl is rated for frost protection down to approximately -20°C under suitable installation conditions. More severe climates require additional engineering of the drinking system, especially the incoming water line.

Q: Can the water connection be installed from either side?
A: Yes. The reference configuration uses a ½" connection that can be arranged from the right or left side.

Q: Can SHEWUYOU customize the drinker for cold-region projects?
A: Yes. Heating, mounting, water connection, supply-line protection and related installation details can be configured according to project requirements.
