During normal operation, the drinking trough is connected to the farm water supply. As sheep consume water, the float level falls and mechanically opens the inlet valve. Heat transfers directly to the trough and water, helping prevent ice formation while avoiding unnecessary continuous heating when temperatures are above the thermostat setting.
