Silo Weighing Retrofit Kit

Product Name Silo Weighing Retrofit Kit
Product Image silo weighing retrofit kit with load cells
Product Overview

The Silo Weighing Retrofit Kit is designed to convert suitable existing feed silos, bins and bulk storage vessels into load-cell-based weighing systems without replacing the complete silo structure.

Weighing modules are installed at the silo support points so that the structural load passes through precision load cells. The resulting electrical signals are collected through a junction box and transmitted to a compatible weight indicator, controller or farm management system.

This retrofit solution is suitable for commercial pig farms, poultry farms, livestock groups and feed-storage projects where operators require improved feed inventory visibility, consumption monitoring and delivery verification while retaining existing silo assets.

Key Features
  • Retrofit-Oriented Design: Enables suitable existing feed silos to be upgraded with electronic weighing capability.
  • Direct Weight Measurement: Load cells measure the actual mechanical load carried by the silo supports.
  • Feed Inventory Monitoring: Provides usable weight data for checking feed stock and planning replenishment.
  • Consumption Tracking: Changes in silo weight can support daily or period-based feed consumption analysis.
  • Modular Installation: Load cells, mounting modules, connection boxes and indicators can be configured according to the existing silo structure.
  • Reduced Manual Inspection: Helps minimize routine silo climbing for visual feed checks.
  • Farm System Integration: Weight signals can be connected to compatible livestock control or feed management equipment.
  • Project-Specific Capacity: Load-cell rating and module quantity are selected according to silo tare weight, feed capacity and support configuration.
Structural Components
  • Load Cells: Strain-gauge sensors that convert vertical silo load into electrical measurement signals.
  • Weighing Modules: Mechanical assemblies that support the silo legs while guiding the load correctly through the sensors.
  • Adapter Plates: Upper and lower structural interfaces used where necessary to match existing silo legs and foundations.
  • Junction Box: Combines multiple load-cell signals and provides organized connection to the indicator or controller.
  • Weight Indicator: Displays the measured silo weight in compatible system configurations.
  • Controller Interface: Optional connection for inventory monitoring, alarms, reporting or integration with farm automation systems.
  • Signal Cables: Connect load cells, junction boxes and controllers with suitable protection for livestock environments.
  • Anti-Lift / Restraint Components: Can be incorporated where required for outdoor silos exposed to wind or structural movement.
Working Principle

The existing silo is supported through weighing modules installed beneath its structural legs or designated load-bearing points. As feed is delivered into or discharged from the silo, the load acting on the load cells changes.

The internal strain gauges in each load cell produce a small electrical signal proportional to the applied force. Signals from the individual support points are combined through a junction box and processed by a compatible weighing indicator or controller.

After correct installation, zero adjustment and calibration, the system can calculate the total silo load and determine the approximate net feed weight after accounting for the established tare weight of the silo and attached structures.

Installation & Maintenance

Pre-Installation Inspection: Check the existing silo legs, concrete foundation, anchor points and surrounding structure before selecting the retrofit modules. The foundation must safely support the silo, stored feed and weighing hardware.

Load Path: The silo working load must pass through the load cells. Rigid feed pipes, discharge equipment, ladders, service platforms or other attached structures should not create uncontrolled alternative load paths.

Mechanical Installation: The silo may require controlled lifting or temporary support while weighing modules are positioned beneath the legs. Installation procedures should follow approved engineering and site safety requirements.

Flexible Connections: Suitable flexible connections may be required on inlet, outlet or auger assemblies to reduce measurement errors caused by binding or external structural forces.

Calibration: Complete zero setting and calibration after all structural work, cabling and mechanical connections are finalized. Verification should include repeat loading where practical.

Routine Maintenance: Inspect mounting modules, cables, junction boxes, anchor bolts and structural clearances periodically. Recalibration is recommended after significant structural modification, load-cell replacement or abnormal weighing behavior.

Commercial Farm Benefits
  • Upgrades existing silos without requiring complete feed-storage replacement.
  • Provides direct feed weight data for inventory management.
  • Supports feed delivery verification and replenishment planning.
  • Helps monitor feed consumption between production houses or farm sites.
  • Reduces routine manual silo inspection.
  • Makes weighing data available for compatible farm management systems.
  • Suitable for phased modernization of large commercial livestock operations.
Product FAQ

Q: Can this kit convert an existing feed silo into a weighing silo?

A: Yes. Suitable existing silos can be retrofitted by installing load-cell weighing modules beneath their structural support points. The silo foundation and leg design must be evaluated before installation.

Q: Does the complete silo need to be replaced?

A: Normally no. The purpose of a retrofit kit is to retain a structurally suitable existing silo while adding weighing components and electronic measurement equipment.

Q: How many load cells are required?

A: The quantity is normally selected according to the number and arrangement of the load-bearing silo supports. Each project should be evaluated individually.

Q: How is the correct load-cell capacity selected?

A: Selection should consider the empty silo weight, maximum feed load, attached equipment, number of support points, uneven load distribution and appropriate engineering safety margins.

Q: Can existing augers remain connected?

A: They can remain where the installation is designed so that connected equipment does not bypass or restrict the weighing system. Flexible connections or structural modifications may be required.

Q: Can the retrofit kit connect to farm management equipment?

A: Yes. Compatible indicators, weighing controllers and communication interfaces can be selected to transmit weight data to suitable farm management systems.

Q: What information is required for quotation and engineering selection?

A: Please provide silo capacity, approximate empty weight, number of support legs, silo leg dimensions, foundation arrangement, maximum feed load, photos of the existing installation, required display or control functions and farm environmental conditions.
