Feed Silo Weighing System

Product Name Feed Silo Weighing System
Product Image feed silo weighing system with load cells
Product Overview

The Feed Silo Weighing System is designed for direct weight measurement of feed stored in outdoor silos or bulk feed bins used in commercial livestock production. Load cells are installed beneath or integrated with the silo support structure so that the total silo load can be measured and converted into usable feed inventory data.

Unlike level-only monitoring, a weighing system measures the mechanical load carried by the silo structure. This provides farm managers with practical information for feed inventory control, daily consumption analysis, feed delivery planning and prevention of unexpected feed shortages.

The system can be incorporated into new pig farm construction, poultry projects, livestock equipment upgrades and steel structure building projects, or adapted to suitable existing silos according to structural conditions and project requirements.

Key Features
  • Direct Feed Weight Measurement: Measures silo load through load cells rather than relying only on estimated feed level.
  • Real-Time Inventory Monitoring: Provides current feed weight information for daily farm management.
  • Feed Consumption Tracking: Weight changes can be used to evaluate daily or period-based feed consumption.
  • Reduced Manual Inspection: Minimizes the need to climb silos for routine visual inventory checks.
  • New-Build or Retrofit Application: Can be configured for suitable new and existing silo installations.
  • Multi-Silo Management: Multiple silo weighing points can be connected to compatible controllers or farm management systems according to project requirements.
  • Outdoor Farm Use: Load cells, junction boxes, cabling and enclosures can be selected for demanding livestock farm environments.
  • System Integration: Can work with automatic feed conveying, feed management and livestock production control systems when compatible interfaces are specified.
Structural Components
  • Load Cells: Installed at the silo support points to convert mechanical load into electrical measurement signals.
  • Weighing Modules / Mounting Assemblies: Support the silo legs while maintaining controlled and repeatable load transfer to the sensors.
  • Junction Box: Combines signals from multiple load cells before transmission to the indicator or controller.
  • Weight Indicator: Displays silo weight and can provide local operating information.
  • Weighing Controller: Processes load-cell signals and manages inventory, consumption or control functions depending on the configuration.
  • Communication Interface: Optional wired or remote communication can connect the weighing system with a farm management platform.
  • Power and Signal Cabling: Selected according to installation distance, electrical environment and project requirements.
Working Principle

The silo and the stored feed apply a vertical load to the supporting legs. Load cells installed at the support points respond to this mechanical force and generate electrical signals proportional to the applied load.

Signals from the individual weighing points are collected through a junction box and processed by a weighing indicator or controller. After correct installation, zero setting and calibration, the system calculates the total silo weight and can determine the quantity of feed remaining after deducting the known tare weight of the empty silo and supporting components.

Changes in measured weight can also be used to monitor feed deliveries, daily feed usage and inventory trends. In compatible automatic feeding systems, weighing data can be linked with feed conveying or farm management controls.

Installation & Maintenance

Foundation Check: The concrete base, silo legs and supporting steel structure should be inspected before installation to confirm that the load is distributed correctly and that the structure is suitable for weighing components.

Load Cell Installation: Each load-bearing support point should transfer force correctly through the weighing module. Side loads, binding, uneven support and uncontrolled mechanical connections should be minimized because they can affect weighing performance.

Cabling: Sensor cables should be mechanically protected and routed away from sources of electrical interference wherever practical.

Calibration: The weighing system should be zeroed and calibrated after mechanical installation and before normal operation.

Routine Maintenance: Periodically inspect load cells, mounting hardware, cable connections, junction boxes and protective enclosures. Check for corrosion, mechanical damage, debris accumulation and any structural changes that may introduce unwanted force into the weighing system.

Commercial Farm Benefits
  • Provides direct feed inventory information for purchasing and delivery planning.
  • Helps identify abnormal feed consumption or unexpected inventory changes.
  • Reduces dependence on manual silo-level inspection.
  • Supports accurate comparison between delivered feed and stored feed.
  • Improves feed logistics for large commercial livestock operations.
  • Can provide useful data for evaluating feed consumption by production stage.
  • Suitable for centralized management of multiple feed silos when integrated with compatible control equipment.
Product FAQ

Q: How does a feed silo weighing system measure remaining feed?

A: Load cells measure the total mechanical load supported by the silo legs. After the empty silo tare weight is established, the controller can calculate the approximate net weight of the stored feed.

Q: Can the system be installed on an existing silo?

A: Suitable existing silos can often be retrofitted, but the support structure, foundation, leg arrangement, available installation space and safe lifting method must be evaluated before installation.

Q: How many load cells are required?

A: The quantity generally corresponds to the silo support arrangement. The reference Agromax stand-alone design uses four or six load cells, while other projects may use different configurations according to silo construction and engineering requirements.

Q: Can feed consumption be monitored?

A: Yes. Changes in silo weight over a defined period can be processed by a compatible controller to monitor feed consumption and inventory trends.

Q: Can the system connect with farm management software?

A: Integration is available when the selected weighing indicator, controller and farm management platform support compatible communication interfaces.

Q: What information is required before selecting the system?

A: Please provide silo capacity, silo tare weight if available, number of support legs, maximum expected load, foundation arrangement, feed type, number of silos, required monitoring functions and installation environment.
