In a continuous backwash configuration, wastewater passes upward through a sand bed while a separate internal circuit lifts, washes and returns the filter media. Pretreated wastewater is distributed near the bottom of the sand bed and flows upward through the media. Retained particles remain within the bed as filtered water leaves through the upper outlet. An airlift conveys sand from the lower part of the filter to a washer. Separated impurities leave with the reject stream, and cleaned sand returns to the top of the bed. The reject stream must be routed into the farm wastewater treatment plan.

Can this filter treat raw pig manure wastewater directly?
It is intended for pretreated wastewater. Raw manure solids and high solids loads should be addressed by suitable upstream treatment before filter selection.

Does filtration stop while the sand is washed?
