covered lagoon anaerobic digester with geomembrane biogas cover
Product Overview The Covered Lagoon Anaerobic Digester System uses an engineered, gas-tight cover over an in-ground lagoon to collect biogas generated as livestock manure and organic farm wastewater break down without oxygen. It can be planned for a new lagoon or evaluated as a retrofit to an existing manure lagoon. For commercial pig farms and dairy operations, the design connects manure collection, lagoon containment, gas handling and effluent management in one site-specific treatment layout.
Key Features
  • An impermeable floating geomembrane captures biogas and helps contain lagoon odors.
  • Engineered perimeter anchoring, ballast and sealed penetrations support cover stability and gas collection.
  • Rainwater collection and removal provisions help prevent excessive loading on the cover.
  • Cover layout, inlet and outlet positions, and gas piping can be adapted to existing pig farm construction and manure transfer routes.
  • Prefabricated membrane sections can simplify transport and site installation, subject to lagoon size and access conditions.
Structural Components A project may include a graded earthen lagoon, bottom and sidewall liner where required, floating geomembrane cover, perimeter anchor trench or other engineered attachment, ballast layout, rainwater drainage, sealed feed and discharge penetrations, and biogas collection piping. Gas conditioning, a flare, energy equipment, monitoring devices and downstream effluent treatment are specified according to project scope. Adjacent pumps, pipe supports and steel structure service buildings are coordinated with the farm layout.
Working Principle Manure slurry or organic wastewater enters the contained lagoon. Anaerobic microorganisms decompose biodegradable material beneath the cover, producing biogas that accumulates in designated spaces and flows to the gas collection line. The gas is then directed to the treatment, flaring or energy-use equipment selected for the project. Treated lagoon effluent leaves through an engineered outlet for storage, further treatment or permitted reuse. In an unheated lagoon, biological activity and gas production vary with seasonal temperature.
Technical Specifications
  • Applicable feed: Suitable livestock manure slurry and organic farm wastewater, subject to feedstock assessment.
  • Lagoon capacity and geometry: According to project requirements.
  • Cover and liner materials: Customizable based on wastewater chemistry, UV exposure and design conditions.
  • Gas collection and rainwater management: Designed for the lagoon layout and expected operating conditions.
  • Heating, pretreatment and downstream treatment: Available upon request.
  • Site design: Designed according to local climate, ground conditions and farm operations.
Applications Commercial swine facilities, dairy farms, cattle operations, livestock breeding groups and agricultural biogas projects with suitable manure or wastewater lagoons. The system is particularly relevant where a large-volume liquid waste stream and available land support lagoon-based treatment. Suitability for an existing lagoon requires a review of its dimensions, liner, embankments, freeboard and operating condition.
Customization Options Cover material, lagoon and liner arrangement, ballast pattern, anchoring detail, rainwater removal, gas take-off points, feed distribution and outlet arrangement can be selected for the site. Project engineering should use the daily wastewater volume, manure characteristics, lagoon survey, local weather data and planned biogas use.
Installation & Maintenance Installation includes lagoon assessment or earthworks, liner preparation where required, membrane placement and seam joining, perimeter anchoring, and connection of gas, drainage and process piping. Seams and penetrations should be checked before commissioning. Routine maintenance includes inspecting the cover and anchors, removing accumulated rainwater, checking gas and condensate lines, and monitoring lagoon level and operating conditions. Access and safety provisions are established during detailed design.
Product FAQ

Can an existing manure lagoon be covered?
Potentially. Its containment, embankments, freeboard, pipe locations and available area must first be assessed.

Is a lagoon liner required?
Liner requirements depend on the existing lagoon condition, soil and groundwater conditions, and applicable project requirements. The floating cover and bottom liner perform different containment functions.

Does the digester make effluent ready for discharge?
No discharge quality is assumed. The effluent may need additional storage, nutrient management or downstream treatment to meet the intended reuse or discharge requirements.
