Product Overview

The Heavy-Duty Breeding Sow Nipple Drinker is a high-capacity drinking valve designed for gestating sows, breeding sows, boars and other mature breeding pigs. Its rugged stainless steel construction withstands intensive animal contact and the humid, corrosive conditions commonly found in commercial pig houses.

Water is released only when the sow activates the internal stem by biting or pressing it. A resilient diaphragm and sealing system return the valve to the closed position after drinking, helping reduce leakage and unnecessary water entering the manure system.

The compact threaded design can be installed on stainless steel or galvanized water pipes, gestation-stall brackets and farrowing water assemblies according to project requirements.

Key Features
  • High-capacity drinking nipple designed for breeding sows and mature pigs.
  • Heavy-duty stainless steel construction provides corrosion and wear resistance.
  • Simple bite-activated mechanism provides fresh water on demand.
  • Reference design operates without conventional springs, flow orifices or protective screens inside the nipple.
  • Adjustable flow rate allows adaptation to water pressure and farm management requirements.
  • Positive shut-off design helps minimize dripping and water waste.
  • High flow capacity supports the drinking requirements of large breeding animals.
  • Standard threaded connection simplifies installation and replacement.
  • Suitable for gestation stalls, breeding pens and farrowing systems.
  • Compatible with centralized pig-house drinking-water systems.
Structural Components
  • Stainless Steel Body: Provides the main pressure-resistant and animal-contact structure.
  • Activation Stem: Moves when contacted by the sow to open the water passage.
  • Silicone Diaphragm: Provides elastic return force to close the valve after drinking in the reference design.
  • Replaceable O-Ring: Provides a positive water seal and helps control leakage.
  • Retainer Screw: Allows water-flow adjustment without changing separate flow orifices.
  • Male Pipe Thread: Connects the nipple to compatible water pipes, brackets or drinking assemblies.
Working Principle

When the sow places the nipple in its mouth and moves the activation stem, the internal seal opens and pressurized water flows directly to the animal.

When the animal releases the stem, the elastic diaphragm returns the mechanism to its normal position and the O-ring closes the water passage.

Water flow can be fine-tuned through the retaining mechanism according to system pressure, animal requirements and farm operating conditions.

Installation & Maintenance

Installation:

  • Flush the water line thoroughly before installing the nipple.
  • Install an appropriate water filter upstream to protect the sealing components from sand and particulate contamination.
  • Thread the nipple into a compatible 1/2-inch female connection or mounting bracket.
  • Position the nipple at a suitable drinking height for mature breeding animals and according to pen design.
  • Adjust system pressure and confirm adequate water flow before introducing animals.
  • Check all threaded joints for leakage after commissioning.

Maintenance:

  • Check water flow regularly at representative drinkers throughout the pig house.
  • Inspect for continuous dripping, restricted flow or abnormal activation resistance.
  • Clean upstream filters according to water quality and farm conditions.
  • Remove mineral deposits from external drinking surfaces when required.
  • Inspect the stem, diaphragm and O-ring during scheduled maintenance.
  • Replace worn sealing components instead of operating a leaking drinker.
  • Flush water lines after maintenance, medication or extended shutdown periods.
Product FAQ

Q: What pigs is this nipple drinker designed for?
A: It is designed primarily for breeding stock, including gestating sows, mature breeding sows and boars.

Q: What is the reference water flow?
A: The Edstrom reference model is factory rated at 2.5 quarts per minute at 40 psi.

Q: Can the water flow be adjusted?
A: Yes. The reference design allows the flow rate to be changed by adjusting the retainer screw.

Q: What pipe connection is used?
A: The reference model uses a standard 1/2-inch male pipe thread, making it suitable for common swine watering pipes and mounting brackets.

Q: Does the nipple require filtered water?
A: Yes. Clean filtered water is recommended for all livestock drinkers. The reference manufacturer recommends a 200-mesh or finer filter to protect the sealing system from particulate contamination.

Q: Can it be installed in gestation stalls?
A: Yes. It can be connected to fixed water pipes or dedicated gestation-stall watering brackets according to the farm layout.

Q: Can complete watering assemblies be supplied?
A: Yes. Water pipes, brackets, pressure regulators, filters and sow/piglet combination assemblies can be configured according to project requirements.

Q: What information is required for a quotation?
A: Please provide sow numbers, housing type, required quantity, water pressure, pipe size, installation arrangement, preferred material and project destination.
