Product Name Adjustable Cattle Alley No-Back Stop
Product Image adjustable cattle alley no-back stop
Product Overview The Adjustable Cattle Alley No-Back Stop is an overhead anti-backing device designed for cattle working alleys, races and handling chutes. It allows cattle to move forward beneath the stop and then automatically drops behind the animal to discourage reverse movement.

The operating height is quickly adjusted by changing the chain position, allowing the same unit to accommodate cattle of different sizes. Its overhead installation keeps the alley floor clear and allows the working race to retain its normal width-adjustment and cattle-flow functions.

The unit can be integrated into straight or curved cattle alleys ahead of squeeze chutes, cattle crushes, weighing systems and other processing equipment.
Key Features
  • Overhead no-back design keeps the cattle alley floor unobstructed.
  • Automatically drops behind cattle after the animal passes underneath.
  • Helps prevent cattle from backing toward the crowding or holding area.
  • Quick chain adjustment changes the operating height for different animal sizes.
  • Suitable for calves, growing cattle and mature animals when correctly adjusted.
  • Compatible with adjustable cattle working alleys.
  • Can be used with straight, S-shaped and U-shaped handling-alley layouts.
  • Does not interfere with normal alley-width adjustment when correctly installed.
  • Heavy-duty steel construction for repeated livestock-handling use.
  • Simple mechanical operation requires no electricity, hydraulics or pneumatics.
  • Modular installation simplifies integration into new or existing cattle yards.
Structural Components
  • Overhead Support Frame: Mounts across the cattle alley and supports the moving stop assembly.
  • Drop-Down Stop Bar: Swings upward as cattle move forward and drops behind the animal after passage.
  • Pivot Assembly: Allows smooth mechanical movement of the stop bar.
  • Height-Adjustment Chain: Sets the resting position according to cattle size.
  • Chain Retainer: Holds the selected operating height during use.
  • Alley Mounting Brackets: Secure the unit to compatible working-alley structures.
  • Steel Tubular Frame: Provides strength for repeated contact in commercial livestock handling systems.
Working Principle The no-back stop is installed above the working alley and adjusted to a suitable height using the retaining chain.

As cattle move forward, the animal contacts and lifts the swinging stop bar sufficiently to pass underneath. After the animal clears the device, gravity allows the stop to drop back into its working position behind the animal.

If the animal attempts to reverse, the lowered stop acts as a physical barrier and discourages backward movement. This helps maintain forward cattle flow toward the squeeze chute, cattle crush, scale or processing station.

Installation & Maintenance
  • Mount the stop securely across compatible structural members of the cattle working alley.
  • Set the chain so the stop height matches the cattle being processed.
  • Confirm that the stop swings upward freely when cattle move forward.
  • Check that the stop drops completely behind the animal after passage.
  • For smoother cattle flow, position the first stop away from the immediate crowding-tub exit; the reference manufacturer recommends at least two animal lengths into the alley.
  • Verify that the device does not interfere with adjustable alley panels or nearby gates.
  • Inspect chains, pivot points, mounting brackets and retaining hardware regularly.
  • Remove manure, bedding and other debris that could interfere with free movement.
  • Replace bent, cracked or excessively worn components before continued operation.
Product FAQ

Q: What does a cattle alley no-back stop do?
A: It allows cattle to move forward through the working alley and then drops behind the animal to discourage it from backing up.

Q: Is the stop adjustable for different cattle sizes?
A: Yes. The operating height can be changed quickly by repositioning the adjustment chain.

Q: Does it require electricity or hydraulic power?
A: No. The standard design operates mechanically using animal movement, pivoting action and gravity.

Q: Can it be fitted to an adjustable cattle alley?
A: Yes. The reference unit is designed for cattle working alleys and can be used with compatible adjustable alley systems.

Q: Will it interfere with alley-width adjustment?
A: When correctly mounted, the reference no-back stop is designed to retain normal working-alley functionality.

Q: Where should the first alley stop be installed?
A: For improved cattle flow, the reference manufacturer recommends positioning the first stop at least two animal lengths forward from the crowding tub.

Q: Can it be used in curved cattle alleys?
A: Yes. The reference stop is shown on both adjustable S-Alley and U-Alley cattle-handling systems.

Q: Can mounting dimensions be customized?
A: Yes. Mounting width, brackets, stop geometry and selected steel specifications can be configured according to project requirements.
