Product Overview

The Multi-Calf Automatic Water Trough is a group watering system designed for calf barns, weaning pens and commercial young-stock facilities where several calves need convenient access to fresh drinking water from one centralized unit.

The trough is connected directly to the farm water supply and uses a mechanical float valve to maintain the required water level automatically. As calves consume water, the float drops and opens the inlet valve. When the preset level is restored, the valve closes automatically.

A long drinking area provides access for several calves while reducing the need for multiple individual bowls. Heavy-duty polyethylene and stainless steel liner configurations can be supplied according to project requirements, with drainage, insulation and frost-protection options available for different climates.

Key Features
  • Multi-Calf Drinking Access: Long drinking surface allows several calves to drink from one watering station.
  • Automatic Float Valve: Maintains the preset water level without repeated manual filling.
  • Fast Water Recovery: High-flow valve configurations are available for group housing and peak drinking periods.
  • Heavy-Duty Construction: Rotomolded livestock-grade polyethylene provides impact resistance and long service life.
  • Stainless Steel Liner Option: Smooth corrosion-resistant drinking surface is available for enhanced hygiene and cleaning.
  • Rounded Animal-Safe Edges: Smooth external geometry helps reduce bruising and sharp contact points.
  • Protected Valve Compartment: Separates the float mechanism from the main drinking area and livestock contact.
  • Easy Drainage: Integrated drainage simplifies flushing, sediment removal and routine sanitation.
  • Insulated Configuration: Double-wall and polyurethane insulation options help stabilize water temperature.
  • Heating Option: Electric frost-protection systems can be supplied for cold-climate calf facilities.

  • Rotomolded polyethylene outer body
  • Optional stainless steel inner trough
  • Automatic float-controlled inlet valve
  • Float and valve operating mechanism
  • Protected valve compartment
  • Removable service cover
  • Water inlet fitting
  • Drain outlet
  • Rounded drinking rim
  • Reinforced base / offset feet
  • Optional polyurethane insulation
  • Optional electric heating system
  • Foundation anchoring points
Working Principle / Structural Principle

The trough is connected to a pressurized livestock water pipeline. A mechanical float inside the protected valve compartment monitors the reservoir water level.

When calves drink and the water level falls, the float moves downward and opens the inlet valve. Fresh water enters the trough until the normal operating level is restored. The rising float then closes the valve automatically.

This constant-level watering principle ensures that fresh water remains available throughout the day while reducing labor associated with manually filling buckets or individual drinkers.

For cold-climate installations, insulated or electrically heated configurations can be selected according to local winter temperature and farm conditions.

  • Centralized automatic watering systems

The multi-calf trough is particularly suitable for group housing where several calves require simultaneous access to water. Compared with individual buckets, a centralized automatic trough can reduce daily watering labor and simplify pipeline management.

For new livestock buildings, trough position can be coordinated with calf partitions, feeding areas, structural columns, drainage channels and centralized water pipelines during the design stage.

Installation & Maintenance

Select the Location: Position the trough where all calves can approach comfortably without interfering with feed bunks, gates or resting areas.

Set the Drinking Height: Installation height should match the age and size of the calf group.

Prepare the Base: Install on a level concrete pad or suitable livestock floor with adequate surrounding drainage.

Connect the Water Supply: Connect the float valve to the farm pipeline and install an accessible shut-off valve.

Flush the Pipeline: Remove sand, rust and construction debris before connecting the automatic valve.

Adjust the Water Level: Set the float mechanism to maintain sufficient drinking depth without overflow.

Check Recovery Rate: Confirm that the selected valve and pipeline can replenish water fast enough for the expected calf group.

Routine Cleaning: Drain and flush the reservoir regularly to remove sediment, feed residue and organic contamination.

Valve Maintenance: Inspect the float, valve seals and inlet components periodically for blockage, wear or leakage.

Project Cases

Multi-calf automatic troughs are suitable for commercial dairy farms converting from individual calf housing to larger post-weaning group pens.

A centrally positioned trough can provide water for several animals while reducing the number of individual valves and pipeline branches required throughout the building.

For new calf barn projects, trough length, drinking height, valve capacity, drainage and pipeline diameter can be planned according to pen size and expected animal numbers.

Product FAQ

Q1: How does the automatic calf water trough refill?
A mechanical float valve opens when the water level drops and closes automatically when the preset level is restored.

Q2: Can several calves drink at the same time?
Yes. The long drinking surface is designed for group housing and can provide multiple calves with access according to the selected trough length.

Q3: Does the trough require electricity?
No. Standard float-valve water control is mechanical. Electricity is only required when an optional heating system is selected.

Q4: What materials are available?
Heavy-duty polyethylene is commonly used, while stainless steel inner trough configurations are also available.

Q5: Is the water level adjustable?
Yes. The float mechanism can be adjusted to maintain the required operating water level.

Q6: Can a high-flow valve be supplied?
Yes. Valve flow can be selected according to calf numbers, pipeline pressure and peak drinking demand.

Q7: Can the drinking height be customized for calves?
Yes. The trough dimensions and drinking height can be designed according to calf age and housing requirements.

Q8: Is the trough easy to clean?
Yes. Smooth internal surfaces and an integrated drain outlet simplify emptying, flushing and sanitation.

Q9: Can the trough be used in cold climates?
Yes. Insulation and electric heating options are available according to local climate and farm conditions.

Q10: Can the product be customized for a complete calf barn project?
Yes. Trough size, valve configuration, water connection, insulation and installation hardware can be supplied according to project requirements.
