3-Way Sheep Sorting Gate

Product Name 3-Way Sheep Sorting Gate
Product Image 3-way sheep sorting gate
Product Overview

The 3-Way Sheep Sorting Gate is a professional livestock drafting component designed to direct goat-farming-equipment/" target="_blank" class="keylink">sheep into three separate routes: left, right or straight ahead. Installed at the exit of a sheep race or handling crate, it enables rapid classification of individual animals during routine flock management.

The gate is suitable for sorting sheep according to live weight, age, sex, breeding group, health status, treatment requirements or market classification. Its three-position design allows operators to create a continuous drafting workflow without repeatedly catching or manually moving animals.

Heavy-duty galvanized steel construction provides durability for intensive livestock environments and outdoor sheep yards. The compact gate structure can be connected with handling races, weighing crates, EID systems, holding pens and modular livestock panels.

For commercial sheep farms, agricultural contractors and complete livestock engineering projects, gate dimensions, operating position and connection arrangements can be customized according to project requirements.

Key Features
  • Three-Way Drafting: Allows sheep to be directed left, right or straight through according to flock-management requirements.
  • High-Efficiency Sorting: Supports rapid separation of animals without interrupting the handling workflow.
  • Hot-Dip Galvanized Construction: Provides corrosion resistance and long service life in demanding agricultural environments.
  • Compact Race Integration: Designed for installation at the discharge end of a sheep handling race or livestock handler.
  • Flexible Operating Position: Gate controls can be arranged for convenient access from the operator's working position.
  • Controlled Livestock Flow: Directional panels guide animals smoothly into the selected exit route.
  • Compatible with Weighing Systems: Can be positioned after a livestock weighing crate for immediate weight-based drafting.
  • EID System Integration: Suitable for use with electronic identification and data-based flock management systems.
  • Modular Yard Connection: Compatible with race panels, hurdles and collection pens.
  • Custom Project Configuration: Dimensions and connection methods can be adapted according to farm layout requirements.

Working Principle / Structural Principle

Sheep enter the drafting point from a single-file handling race. The operator positions the gate according to the required destination before the animal reaches the exit.

For the first sorting route, the gate directs the animal to one side. Reversing the gate position directs the next animal to the opposite side, while the central position allows a straight run-through. This three-position principle provides three independent livestock destinations from one race.

The system can be combined with weighing or EID equipment so drafting decisions are made immediately after identification, weighing or inspection, improving labour efficiency in commercial flock management.

Installation & Maintenance

The 3-way sorting gate is normally positioned at the discharge end of a straight handling race, weighing crate or sheep handler. Three collection routes should be arranged so livestock can leave the drafting point without sharp turns or unnecessary obstruction.

Connect the gate frame securely to compatible race panels using joining pins, brackets or engineered fixing components. The base should remain level to ensure smooth gate movement and reliable alignment with each exit passage.

Before operation, confirm that the gate moves freely between all three positions and that locking or stop components engage correctly. The operator handle should remain accessible without requiring personnel to enter the livestock movement zone.

Regular maintenance includes removing manure and debris from hinges, pivot points and floor areas, checking joining pins and fasteners, and inspecting galvanized surfaces for mechanical damage.

Project Cases

A typical three-way drafting layout consists of a forcing pen, single-file race and 3-way sorting gate connected to three collection pens. One group can continue straight ahead while two additional groups are directed to the left and right.

For breeding farms, the system can separate replacement females, breeding animals and cull groups during a single handling session. Finishing operations can use the same layout to classify livestock according to target live weight.

The gate can also be installed after an electronic weighing or EID station to support data-based drafting in larger commercial sheep operations.

Product FAQ

Q: What does a 3-way sheep sorting gate do?

A: It allows sheep leaving a handling race to be directed left, right or straight ahead into three separate livestock groups.

Q: What can sheep be sorted by?
