How to Design an Efficient Livestock Feeding and Drinking System

Feeding and drinking systems directly affect animal growth, feed conversion, health, labor requirements, and overall farm performance. Poorly designed systems can cause feed waste, insufficient water intake, uneven growth, contamination, and increased maintenance costs.

Determine Animal Requirements

System design should begin with the animal species, age, body weight, group size, and production stage. Piglets, finishing pigs, sows, calves, dairy cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry have different feeding behaviors and water requirements.

The number and position of feeding and drinking points should allow convenient access and minimize competition.

Evaluate Feed Characteristics

Feed type affects equipment selection. Dry feed, wet feed, liquid feed, pellets, powder, silage, and mixed rations require different storage, conveying, and dispensing equipment.

Materials and internal surfaces should be suitable for the feed being handled and should minimize blockage, residue, corrosion, and contamination.

Plan the Water Supply

A livestock drinking system should provide clean water at an appropriate pressure and flow rate. The design should consider:

  • Available water source
  • Peak water demand
  • Pipe diameter and length
  • Water pressure
  • Filtration requirements
  • Medication or dosing equipment
  • Drainage and cleaning access

Water flow should be checked regularly at points located farthest from the main supply.

Reduce Feed and Water Waste

Feeders should be adjusted according to animal size and feeding behavior. Excessive feed discharge increases waste, while insufficient flow limits intake.

Drinkers should be installed at suitable heights and angles. Incorrect pressure or positioning can lead to water waste, wet floors, poor hygiene, and increased manure volume.

Support Cleaning and Maintenance

Equipment should be accessible for inspection, cleaning, adjustment, and replacement. Dead corners and areas where feed or water can accumulate should be minimized.

Filters, valves, pipes, motors, sensors, and dispensing components should be included in a preventive maintenance schedule.

Allow for Future Expansion

Where possible, feeding and drinking systems should be designed with additional capacity for future buildings or increased animal numbers. Planning expansion during the initial design stage is usually more economical than rebuilding the entire system later.

Before purchasing equipment, farmers should combine farm drawings, animal capacity, feed type, water conditions, and management goals into a complete system plan.
